No matter what your political bent, you’ll want to check out the latest episode of Charles Brock’s The Highland Woodworker, which Popular Woodworking proudly sponsors, and watch as he visits former President Jimmy Carter. Chuck gets and an up-close look at the Moulthrop bowls and Sam Maloof furniture President Carter keeps in his office. He also hears about the friendship Carter developed with these revered makers. (If, like me, you’re a Maloof fan, you may also want to take a look at Charles Brock’s books and DVDs on building a Maloof-style rocker or chair. I’ve got copies of both, and even though I don’t build Maloof-style seating I find the templates a great reference when I’m trying to determine the critical proportions and dimensions for a new chair or rocker design.)

From there Chuck visits the Moulthrop shop itself and gets a lesson on bowl turning from Philip and Matt Moulthrop, who strive to make bowls with the same level of craftsmanship as Ed Moulthrop. You’ll also hear Chuck talk about his favorite WoodSlicer band saw blades, learn about Masterpiece Wood Finish and take a closer look at an old reliable furniture wood, white oak.

Chuck also dropped by my shop for a quick tip on making bridle joints – one of my favorite joints for making doors or frame-and-panel assemblies for any purpose. In just a few minutes I run through a simple way to make this beautiful exposed joint, which you may remember from my Krenovian wall cabinet in the April 2112 Issue # 196 of Popular Woodworking Magazine.
