As we get closer to winter here in New York, I thought that it was about time to wrap up showing the summer projects that my woodworking students in Belmont Hill School have built. Emily’s clock had perhaps the most attention to detail of the pieces made by these young woodworkers.
What we set out to do was create two wave-shape facades and lay on them a thin piece of 3-ply model making veneer. We glued the strip of veneer to the wave and secured it with two rows of decorative nails. Emily painted one of the facades and added beautiful numbers.
Check it out…
1. The wave-like facades were formed.
2. The clock mechanism was installed into a shallow mortise.
3. The facades were glued to the base.
4. The numbers were pained on
5. The finished piece. Notice the nice cherry wood details we added to complete the piece – sealing the base and accentuating the clock's zenith.
