My favorite project is usually the last one I’ve finished, or the one I’m about to start. The cover project for the April 2011 issue of Popular Woodworking Magazine will likely stay a favorite for a long, long time. It’s a reproduction of a Gustav Stickley No. 369 bent arm chair. Gus knew what he was doing, it’s one of the best looking and best sitting chairs ever made. I tried to make as accurate a reproduction as I could, and the challenges of building it without cutting corners or looking for an easy way out were worth it. The chair now sits in my living room in front of the fireplace, and if I’m home you’ll likely find me there, if I’ve managed to shoo away the cats, kid and wife. As always, it’s hard to fit everything about a good project in eight magazine pages, so here are some extras about making the Morris chair.  First off is a video tour:

When I was blogging about building the chair, readers asked for information about the upholstery. I found a good local upholsterer, and he shared his patterns and techniques for making the seat and back cushions. If you’re building your own version of this chair (and you’re brave enough to do your own upholstery) I’ve prepared a PDF document that gives the sizes and details. You can download the PDF file by clicking here.

And of course, I’ve uploaded a SketchUp model to our collection in Google’s 3D Warehouse. Click Here to visit our collection and download the model.

    Hi Mick,

I just tried the link, and it’s working fine from the blog post. Here’s the link again: http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/details?mid=1c5d66f3e7352cbf310af74324aae27f. If you’re searching from the 3D Warehouse, look for “Stickley 369” and it should pop right up. The model hasn’t made it to our “SketchUp Pages” here on this site.

The google link to sketchup for morris chair is not working. Tried it here, entered address, and through the website.
In google warehouse did have a morris chair from back in the year 2000 or 2001 forgot, not as nice as Mr. Langs.

    Thanks

Great looking chair, have been reading and rereading the plans in the print edition. Any easy chair I sit in to read PW has to have a foot stool. Any chance on those plans in a future issue
