Old Tongue and groove Pine floor boards from an old school house. Cleaned up, the T&G ripped off, left a lot of 3/4' x 3" vertical grain boards. Using a frame and panel construction, and raised panels, made a box for the Blanket chest. Raised panels were made using a table saw to made the 1/4" tongue around the edges of each panel. This made a rabbet. Then some work with a plane to round over the edges to "raise" the panel. Next, a top. Not just any top, but a coopered top. Edges of the boards were beveled to fit a curved frame. A plane then smoothed out the top's curve. Inside, the bottom, instead of plywood ( didn't have any on hand) a bunch of slats were fastened to cleats, with a slight1/16" gap between each slat. Brass hinges and a brass latch completed the build. An "Antigue Cherry" stain with a couple coats of gloss poly finished thing off.
