I will be at the Atlanta Woodcraft store teaching a three-day weekend class on using SketchUp, Friday July 15 through Sunday July 18. There are a couple of seats available if you want to join me in learning how to use the software that we use here at Popular Woodworking Magazine for planning our projects.
These classes are always a lot of fun; it’s full-immersion SketchUp specifically tailored to the type of projects woodworkers want to make (no terrain modeling or rafter layout, but all the dovetails and mortises and tenons you want). And I focus on the common things woodworkers struggle with in learning to model in three dimensions. The class alternates between me babbling in the front of the room with a projector connected to my computer, and hands-on practice for the students. I show a technique, demonstrate it step by step, then while the students practice I help them out one on one.
Whether you’ve tried SketchUp and given up in frustration, used it a little and want to get better in a hurry, or consider yourself pretty good and want to pick my brain on the fine points, you’ll get a lot out of the class. I will be ably assisted by Aaron Marshall (one of my helpers at Woodworking in America last year), so there will be plenty of time to get your questions answered and you’ll leave the class with a new bag of tricks for modeling and project planning.
I will be at the store Thursday night, July 14, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m., giving a demonstration of how I use SketchUp, signing books and answering questions on any woodworking or design topic. I hope you’ll stop by and say hello.
